Enabling Operational Excellence with Non-Functional Requirements

Presented by: Charise Angderson, David Windeler

A body of knowledge once said “determining the optimal portfolio of non-functional requirements … is central to delivering value to stakeholders” (BABOK v3, pg 304).

Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are the foundation to any solution's success because they define the performance efficiency, scalability, security, usability, and other parameters essential for ensuring operations excellence. NFRs are by nature cross-functional. Effective and mature management of NFRs requires powerful teaming across a cross-functional stakeholder group and prioritizing NFRs alongside functional requirements. Who better than the business analyst to drive this collaborative DevOps effort to define NFRs?

This presentation will demonstrate how business analysts supported by their community of practice (CoP) led operations excellence and DevOps by driving NFRs analysis through collaboration. We’ll share the story of our NFRs management program, how it evolved from departmental silos to the empowerment of BAs, removal of communication barriers, and unification of cross-functional stakeholders. We will show how BAs can leverage effective elicitation and collaboration techniques from BABOK to conduct NFRs analysis. We’ll share souvenirs of our journey in the way of lessons learned for your organization to take away to deliver superior solutions through consolidating NFR managed by a CoP.

What Attendees Will Learn:

  • to leverage elicitation and collaboration techniques from BABOK to lead NFRs analysis
  • understand the challenges and lessons learned that may arise when evolving a NFR program and how to mitigate risks and issues toward Operations Excellence
  • gain a new perspective on how Business Analysts through managing stakeholder collaboration can lead DevOps culture so their organizations achieve operations excellence
  • learn the role that a CoP can play in promoting operations excellence and DevOps through management of NFRs.
