Married, With Children: Communication Do's and Don'ts in the PM/BA Relationship

Presented by: Michelle Green, Luis Ramirez

In projects, the PM and BA are like parents and the project the child.  How the child turns out depends greatly on the actions of the parents.  A good PM/BA relationship with a strong foundation can help drive a project family towards success; and a bad one can drive a project to be littered with defects, budget issues, with project teams stressed out, overworked and sometimes can even lead to terminations or resignations - DIVORCE.  Projects get personal.  You put a lot of yourself into them.  You want what’s best for your stakeholders; and have to work together to make sure the project remains healthy (cost, time, etc.) and happy (according to stakeholder needs).  So what do you do to keep your house is in order?  You communicate, communicate, communicate.

With a combined 50+ years of PM/BA experience, Luis and Michelle have worked at JM Family together as a successful PM/BA team on projects ranging from the short 6-month effort with small centralized teams, to larger projects with remote teams spanning multiple states and countries. They will take you through the communication do's and don’ts that can help you set yourself up as a new PM/BA team, get through the honeymoon stage of your relationship quickly, and navigate the rough terrain of a typical project lifecycle.  They will use their own personal experiences with each other as examples of what worked and what didn’t to get them to a place where they have become a highly productive unit in projects of any size or subject.

Oh, and expect to have some fun along the way.  This PM/BA team didn’t learn to work together without some interesting conversations, feisty battles, and creative resolutions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Building a new PM/BA team
  • The importance of the PM/BA relationship in a project.
  • PM/BA Communication Tips and Tricks
