RE goes Digital Design - A New Understanding of Requirements Engineering (RE) and Agile Development for Digital Transformation
Presented by: Stefan Sturm
Projects under the umbrella term digital transformation are innovative by nature, they create new business models (e.g. Airbnb), new socio-economic structures (e.g. social networks) and have the potential to change society. Consequently, stakeholders have difficulties to define detailed requirements. Therefore, such projects require a different development approach were the new system is proactively designed rather than derived from requirements. As a conclusion, the key for successful digital transformation is the adoption of a designer’s attitude towards software development. Successful companies like Apple or Phillips have addressed this need for design by putting a Chief Design Officer on their executive boards.
Digital Design is the next step in the evolution of RE that implements this need for design competence in software projects. It combines known practices from RE and Agile development with proven practices from industrial design. This mixture is necessary for creating innovative and sustainable systems in the context of digital transformation.
This talk provides an overview of Digital Design and presents case studies from different domains that illustrate the successful application of Digital Design.
