All Models are right ... Models - Culture and Beliefs

Presented by: Juergen Pitschke

Models are used for many purposes in Business Process Management and Business Architecture. Describing strategy, describing processes on different levels of abstraction, describing KPIs, and much more, modeling business decisions and business rules. Models in different forms are the base for many working techniques.

We invest many resources into Model Engineering. But our models are not always accepted as we wish to. One reason is that we only pay attention to the (primary) content. Culture and beliefs influence the creation and interpretation of our models more than we expect. Describing the pure, "objective" content in the most accurate way is not enough. Becoming clear about assumptions and design decisions is essential for developing our models and for Change Management. Often the question is not to improve single activities in a process or improving the flow but to change the culture and beliefs of the organization or people.

This leaves us with the question to classify and describe the soft factors of the context of our models.

Learning Objectives:

  • Be clear about the context of your models.
  • Understand the culture and believes of your enterprise.
  • Model Engineering is problem solving.
  • Select the right models and working techniques.
