Delivering Value on COTS Projects: The Key BA Techniques

Presented by: Laura Brandenburg

It's increasingly common for organizations to deploy commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) or software-as-a-service (SAAS) products as part of implementing new capabilities and business change. Business analysts who have historically focused on functional and software requirements might feel their careers are threatened on these types of projects.

The reality is that business analysis is incredibly valuable, and necessary, to ensure these projects deliver their anticipated return on investment. Without solid business analysis, your organization risks solving the wrong problem, or creating bigger problems that need to be fixed later. Before they hired a business analyst, one of my clients implemented a document management system to save time and paper, only to find the business users were printing and scanning documents multiple times after the new "improved" solution was implemented.

Don’t let your organization make this kind mistake! In this presentation, you'll learn what business analysis techniques are critical on COTS and SAAS projects, and how to customize your approach to be not only relevant, but essential to the project's success, and what business analysis techniques to apply when.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to apply business process analysis to understand the current and future state workflows.
  • How to apply functional requirements techniques, to clarify configuration and customization options
  • How to apply data modeling techniques to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
