BBC 2017 Speaker Series – Consultants:  Fabrício Laguna at Gigante Consultoria Empresarial Ltda

In anticipation of his presentation at Building Business Capability in Orlando, Nov. 6-10, 2017, we asked Fabrício Laguna, Consultant and Instructor at Gigante Consultoria Empresarial Ltda, a few questions about transforming the business. Check out this interview in relation to his BBC presentation entitled, Culture Modeling Workshops: A Practical Approach to Transform an Organization

Q: In what ways do you help your client organizations handle business transformation?

A: Usually, we start from a strategic plan to define direction (Mission, Vision, Goals and Objectives) and then we use a process modelling to understand the AS-IS and TO-BE, identify the gaps and create a project portfolio with change initiatives.

In this BBC session, I will present a situation where this approach was not enough. There was a BIG issue preventing process change: CULTURE.

Q: Can you describe the challenges you have faced?

A: We faced a bad mood for change. The people were disbelieving. A lot of bad attitudes formed a compartmental pattern that ignores established processes making people to work always ad-hoc. A new process map wouldn’t change it. We needed a culture change approach.

Q: Process can be mapped in AS-IS and TO-BE forms. How about culture?

A: Organization Culture may be mapped as well. The notation is obviously different, but the power of modelling the culture in collaborative workshops among the key stakeholders is impressive. We had great outcomes in the sessions we conducted. Recognizing the problems in the acting culture was like therapy. And participants engaged in the business transformation because they wanted to change the mood of the place they work.

At BBC 2017 we will detail the method we used and present the results we had.

Q: What are your top suggestions for companies looking to become more agile?

A: Do not neglect the culture change that needs to be made. Identify the key behaviors that prevent the company from being agile and seek to understand why people act in this way. Work on changing the causes and the behavior will change.

Q: What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned in the past year?

A: Agile is not about breaking big work in small parts. It is about embracing change and using opportunities to bring better results to business.

Q: What do you see as the most important goal or trend for business analysts and other professionals to keep in mind?

A: Work collaboratively and help people to do the same. Our role as a business analyst is to facilitate collaboration. Seek to simplify communication by synthesizing the elicited knowledge and helping people understand each other. Promoting communication and understanding is ennobling.
