BBC Interview Series: Jason Bloomberg at Intellyx
BBC 2017 Speaker Series – Consultants: Jason Bloomberg at Intellyx
In anticipation of his presentation at Building Business Capability in Orlando, Nov. 6-10, 2017, we asked Jason Bloomberg, President at Intellyx, a few questions about pursuing business excellence. Check out his interview in relation to his BBC presentations entitled, Agile Digital Transformation and Digital Transformation Requires Enterprisewide Agile Transformation.
Q: In what ways do you help your client organizations handle business transformation?
A: Our main role is to challenge assumptions. People think they understand digital transformation, but in reality, there are many subtleties and complexities that make it very difficult to grasp the full picture. We help people expand their thinking about the topic.
Q: Can you describe the challenges you face or have already overcome in establishing more robust business transformation capabilities for your clients?
A: Perhaps the greatest challenge to overcome is understanding that digital transformation is more about organizational change than technology – and furthermore, requires organizational change unlike any they have undergone before.
Q: What are your top suggestions for companies looking to become more agile?
A: Business agility is more a property of organizations rather than individuals, and the particular actions that individuals must take to provide greater agility for their organizations can be unpredictable and vary from one situation to another. To address these challenges, people need to think one level of abstraction higher – about how to deal with change itself better.
Q: What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned in the past year?
A: Artificial Intelligence has more promise than people give it credit for and blockchain has less.
Q: What do you see as the most important goal or trend for business analysts and other professionals to keep in mind?
A: Digital transformation doesn’t mean changing into some kind of digital state, but rather means making change a core competency of the organization. As a result, there is no final state.
Q: What’s the latest method/process/tool you’ve implemented to help your client’s business’s operate more effectively? Have you seen any results yet?
A: What we call the ‘DevOps Virus’ – taking the cultural shift that DevOps represents for the software development and operations part of IT and extending it across the entire enterprise.
Q: If you could go back 5 years in time and give some professional insight or advice to yourself, what would it be?
A: Found Intellyx that much sooner.
Q: What’s one question you wished you were asked in this interview but were not? And how would you answer?
A: What about your new book? Glad you asked! My next book, Agile Digital Transformation, will be coming out in late 2017 or early 2018. Both my talk and my workshop at BBC will be based on material from the book.
Q: Sneak preview: Please tell us a take-away that you will provide during your talk at the Building Business Capability (BBC) conference this year?
A: If you’re a techie, you’ll think my talk is too high-level and business-focused. If you’re on the business side you’ll think my talk is too technical. In reality, digital transformation is both customer-driven and software-empowered, so part of the challenge for the audience is to be both technical and business-focused at the same time.
